What Now? The State of Saskatoon Politics

The Civic Election is just around the corner! Now is the time to engage with candidates who want to represent you. City Council plays a major role in the decisions that affect our everyday lives, from how much we pay in taxes and the safety of our city. That’s why it’s important to ask the right questions.

Ask the Your Candidate the tough questions, and vote for the future you want in Saskatoon. Here are some key questions to start the conversation:

City Council Must Cut Expenses. Council has are project a 5.3 Million Dollar Deficit in 2025. Ask your candidate:

  • How will you ensure our tax dollars are spent wisely and reduce unnecessary spending?

Saskatoon Crime Rates Are Way Up. Saskatoon crime rates jumped by 10% in the first quarter alone. Ask your candidate:

  • What is your plan to address rising crime and support law enforcement?

City Council Needs To Say In Their Lane. The new Solar Farm is not in the responsibility of Civic Government, power generation is a Provincial responsibility. Ask your candidate:

  • What projects would you prioritize that are the true responsibility of City Hall?

City Council Must Be Transparent. There have been decisions, deals, and motions that have quietly been pushed through. Ask your candidate:

  • How will you make sure the city council is transparent and accountable to the public?

City Council Isn’t Listening. From concerns about spending, to increased taxes, to the shelter in Fairhaven, they just tune citizens out. Ask your candidate:

  • What steps will you take to ensure residents' voices are heard and respected in city council decisions?

It is key to remember, each level of government has core responsibilities. Civic government is responsible for managing the services and infrastructure that keep our city running smoothly. These responsibilities include things such as:

  • Road Maintenance & Snow Removal: Ensuring safe and well-maintained streets, roads, and sidewalks.

  • Public Safety: Supporting law enforcement and emergency services.

  • Local Tax Policies: Setting property tax rates and managing the city budget.

  • Community Services: Parks, Libraries, and Garbage.

Remember, the only way to change City Council is through our democratic process.
